Record-breaking Grand Slam champions Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have been drawn to potentially face each other in the second round of the Olympics in Paris, creating a highly anticipated clash.
Nadal, who won a gold medal in singles at the 2008 Olympics and a doubles gold in Rio in 2016, is participating in his final Games. Djokovic, a bronze medalist in singles in 2008, starts his campaign against Matthew from Australia.
The Serbian player, Djokovic, is currently a 24-time Grand Slam champion and the top seed in Paris after the withdrawal of world number one Jannik Sinner.
“I am excited for this duel in the second round, and I will give it my all,” said Djokovic, who has faced Nadal 59 times over the span of 18 years. “I am aware of the importance of the Olympic Games. I represent my country, which brings more responsibility and even more pressure.”
Nadal, known for his dominance on the clay of Roland Garros where he has won 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles, will commence his Olympic journey against Marton Fucsovics from Hungary.
Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed and the champion of both the French Open and Wimbledon, will take on Hady Habib from Lebanon in the opening round. The tournament begins on Saturday.
The French Open holds a special place in the 38-year-old Nadal’s heart. Although he faced an early exit in the tournament last month due to injury, he expressed excitement about returning to Roland Garros. “It’s another opportunity and a chance to enjoy every single moment,” he said.
Defending Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, seeded third, will face Jaume Munar from Spain in his opening match.
