Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed uncertainty about the future of goalkeeper Ederson at the club this summer.
Ederson has caught the attention of the Saudi Pro League, sparking interest in his services.
In spite of selecting Stefan Ortega as the backup goalkeeper for the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, Guardiola reiterated at the end of last season that Ederson remains his preferred choice.
Following his team’s 4-3 friendly defeat against Celtic in North Carolina, Guardiola remarked, “I would like him to stay, but ultimately, it depends on other clubs. I’m not aware of the current situation. There haven’t been any recent contacts. It’s a matter of him training with us until the transfer window concludes, and then we shall see.”
Ederson came on as a substitute during City’s loss to Celtic in Chapel Hill, marking the Premier League champions’ opening pre-season game.
While Ederson’s future remains unclear, it appears likely that Kalvin Phillips will depart City, most probably on loan, before the transfer window closes on August 30.
Phillips endured a challenging period at West Ham during the latter half of last season, which ended his chances of being selected for Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.
Guardiola explained Phillips’ substitution against Celtic, stating that it was done to protect the player following his injury towards the end of the previous season. “That’s why we didn’t give him more minutes. I’m unsure of what the future holds. He is aware of the situation, and we will have to wait and see,” Guardiola stated.
