Indigenous automaker, Lanre Shittu Motors, has accomplished a significant milestone by becoming the first company in Nigeria to assemble fully compressed natural gas-powered buses. The company also expressed its willingness to assist large fleet purchasers, including state governments, in setting up mobile CNG stations across different locations.

During a media launch of the buses in Lagos, Managing Director of Lanre Shittu Motors, Mr. Taiwo Shittu, stated that the CNG vehicles are being assembled at the Amuwo Odofin assembly plant in Lagos. In the first phase, the company plans to introduce 100 units of the buses in two specifications to support President Bola Tinubu’s CNG initiative, which aims to improve public transportation and offset the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

The first specification is a 31-seater bus intended for intra-airport shuttles, while the second specification is a 54-seater mass transit city bus that can accommodate up to 25 standing passengers. Taiwo Shittu emphasized that these buses are not conversions or hybrids but genuine CNG vehicles. Interested parties, especially states interested in saving costs, are encouraged to engage with Lanre Shittu Motors.

Both the airport shuttle bus and the city bus are equipped with seven CNG cylinders. The city bus can travel for 450-500 kilometers before requiring a recharge. The buses are equipped with charging stations, air conditioning, durability, viewing screens, and ample space for storage and wheelchairs.

Lanre Shittu Motors guarantees a complete 70% reduction in operation costs with its branded CNG buses. In comparison to diesel, CNG costs between N200 and N230 per kg, while diesel is sold at prices ranging from N1,200 to N1,400 per liter depending on the state. The inherent safety features of CNG also prevent fuel theft or diversion.

In addition to the assembly and sale of CNG buses, Lanre Shittu Motors is willing to install mobile CNG stations at various locations for large fleet buyers. The company has invested in training its workers in CNG technology and plans to expand its training programs in partnership with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) to other states.

The Director General of the NADDC, Mr. Joseph Osanipin, commended Lanre Shittu Motors for locally assembling full CNG buses. He stated that the NADDC is supporting the initiative and working with Lanre Shittu Motors to test run the buses. The NADDC will also ensure the necessary training for individuals involved in operating the CNG buses.
