Author Of “Shopaholic” Sophie Kinsella Discusses Her Personal Journey Battling Brain Cancer

Renowned British author Sophie Kinsella, famous for her best-selling Shopaholic book series, recently appeared on Good Morning America to discuss her battle with brain cancer.

In an interview with Robin Roberts, the co-anchor of the morning talk show, Ms. Kinsella, accompanied by her husband of over 30 years, Henry Wickham, shared her journey of discovering her illness.

In November 2022, the author sought medical advice after experiencing a lack of coordination, leading to a brain scan that revealed a grade 4 glioblastoma. Shortly after, Ms. Kinsella underwent an extensive eight-hour surgery to remove the aggressive and fast-growing tumor.

Describing the operation as a triumph, she expressed gratitude for her medical team who successfully managed to remove the entire visible tumor.

Ms. Kinsella subsequently received treatment at the University College Hospital in London, which included chemotherapy, radiation, and weekly chemotherapy pills.

Despite the success of her brain surgery, the author faced various challenges such as memory loss and impaired movement, which she has been diligently working to overcome through rehabilitation.

“I am incredibly grateful to my family, close friends, and the exceptional doctors and nurses who have been a tremendous support throughout my journey. I also want to express my heartfelt appreciation to my readers for their unwavering support,” she conveyed during the candid interview on Good Morning America.

Reflecting on her battle with cancer, Ms. Kinsella spoke fondly of her husband, recounting his unwavering support and positivity. “He has been an absolute hero. He stayed with me in the hospital the entire time,” she emotionally shared. Recalling a teary moment, she revealed, “I once said to him, ‘You didn’t sign up for this.’ And do you know what he said? He said, ‘Yes, I did. In sickness and in health’.”

Highlighting her husband’s role as her caregiver, Ms. Kinsella shared how he brings her a cup of tea every morning and shares stories of hope to uplift her spirits. “I’ve already exceeded the average. So, you know, that’s how we get through. We just hope,” she added.

Ms. Kinsella explained that her perspective on life has changed during her fight against brain cancer, emphasizing the importance of living in the present. “You just think, ‘Well, let’s not think about the global picture, let’s just think about today,'” she shared.

Looking towards the future, the author offered her hopes for a happy ending. “My happy ending is that whatever happens to me, my family will be okay. That’s what I care about,” she concluded.
