Actress Candace Cameron Bure recently shared her thoughts on the controversial opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The ceremony drew criticism for featuring a drag show performance that some interpreted as a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic painting, “The Last Supper,” which depicts Jesus Christ sharing his final meal with his apostles before his crucifixion. The segment included drag queens and a nude singer, sparking debate and outrage.
Mrs. Bure, known for her role in the popular sitcom “Full House,” expressed her hesitancy in publicly commenting on the opening ceremony, but felt compelled to share her perspective. As a lover of the Olympic Games and with personal connections to the event through her husband, brother-in-law, and father-in-law, who are all Olympic medalists, she felt deeply saddened by the portrayal of the Last Supper during the ceremony.
In a video, Mrs. Bure stated, “To watch such an incredible and wonderful event that’s going to take place over the next two weeks and see the opening ceremonies completely blaspheme and mock the Christian faith with their interpretation of the Last Supper was disgusting.”
The actress emphasized her sadness rather than anger, expressing concern for the spiritual well-being of those involved in the performance. She concluded the video by pledging her support for Christian athletes competing in the Paris Olympics, intending to watch the games and cheer them on while hoping to see God glorified.
In response to those trying to downplay the controversy, Mrs. Bure stated in her post’s caption that she remains unconvinced by the argument that the performance wasn’t an interpretation of Da Vinci’s The Last Supper. She questioned the connection between this portrayal and the goal of unifying the world through sports, especially considering the young audience watching the ceremony.
Candace Cameron Bure rose to fame with her role in “Full House” in 1987. She has since appeared in various films and television shows, including several projects for the Hallmark Channel. In 2022, she transitioned to an executive role at Great American Family, where she plans to create and star in films.
In the aftermath of the opening ceremony, numerous social media users expressed their disapproval and called for a boycott of the Olympic Games. Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps addressed the backlash during a July 28 news conference, acknowledging any offense caused and apologizing for any disrespect perceived. Descamps clarified that the intention was to celebrate community tolerance, and if anyone was offended, they sincerely regretted it.
