Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan, Enyimba of Aba, and Plateau United of Jos are among the 30 youth teams from all over the country competing for a share of the N40 million prize money at the first-ever Nigeria Youth League Cup (NYLC).
Other noteworthy teams include Lobi Stars of Makurdi, Kwara United, Rivers United, Kano Pillars, Yobe Desert Stars of Yobe, Gateway FC of Abeokuta, and Akwa United of Uyo.
During a media briefing in Abuja, the President of NYLC, Robinson Adakosa, described the tournament as an exclusive youth development program aimed at providing top-notch football experience and competition for teenagers and young adults between the ages of 16 and 19.
The significant prize money will only be divided among the top four teams, as the objective of the tournament is to assess the players’ quality.
Adakosa also announced that each participating club in the Nigerian Premier Football League and National League will receive N5 million to ease the financial burden of running their first team.
The season is scheduled to begin on September 8, 2024, and conclude in April 2015, offering eight months of exhilarating football showcasing the talents of the players.
Adakosa projected that 1,000,000 viewers worldwide will watch the games through physical and online streaming platforms.
One of our main goals is to provide young people with the opportunity to benefit from participating in team sports and activities within a safe and organized environment, inspiring youths from all backgrounds to embrace the values of sportsmanship and physical fitness.
NYLC aims to offer our youth the level of competitiveness and experience required to pursue a career in professional international football,” he added.
Adakosa explained that NYLC will be contested in two stages, starting with regional championships where all winners will progress to two conferences.
The top two teams from each conference will then advance to the national championship.
