Moniepoint, the fastest-growing financial institution in Africa, has announced its sponsorship of the Varsity Cup 2024 season to support collegiate sports and nurture talent in Nigeria’s football industry. This partnership aligns with Moniepoint’s mission of empowering individuals and expanding opportunities in various aspects of life.
The Varsity Cup, known as the Champions League of Nigerian Universities, is a prestigious annual national football championship for the top men’s and women’s university football teams in Nigeria. This season’s competition will feature the country’s top 10 university teams, competing in 26 matches over five weeks to determine the Varsity Champions, as well as relegating the two bottom-placed teams.
Moniepoint’s sponsorship not only allows the company to connect directly with university students through exciting football games on campuses, but also enables them to stream live Varsity matches digitally. Chinedu Oparaku, the Director of Marketing Nigeria at Moniepoint, emphasized the importance of sports in national building, character development, and strategic thinking skills for young people.
“At Moniepoint, we are driven by our passion to harness the transformative power of sports as a catalyst for talent development and the realization of career aspirations. Varsity Cup’s mission aligns perfectly with our own mission of empowering dreams for all, including members of the higher education community,” said Oparaku.
Oparaku further highlighted the significant role of sports, particularly football, in fostering social cohesiveness, creating business opportunities, generating employment, and providing positive role models. Moniepoint is committed to supporting platforms that enable young athletes to pursue their dreams and become the best versions of themselves.
Olamide Adeyemo, the Chief Executive Officer of Varsity Cup, expressed excitement about the partnership with Moniepoint and recognized the influential role that corporate sponsors play in the growth of sports and education.
“We are thrilled to have a global brand like Moniepoint join us in building a national platform for the development of collegiate sports in Nigeria. This collaboration marks a significant step forward for thousands of young athletes and their families,” said Adeyemo.
The Varsity Cup, managed by Perform Agency in partnership with the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), aims to redefine the landscape of collegiate football in Nigeria, both in the men’s and women’s categories. The upcoming season of the men’s football championship is scheduled to take place from October 8 to November 6, 2024, while the women’s football tournament will be launched in the 2025 season.
