Mr. Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party in the upcoming 2023 presidential election, has clarified that he did not express willingness to run as a vice presidential candidate. Obi had been quoted during a recent television interview as saying that he would accept the position if he finds someone who shares his vision. However, on his X platform yesterday, the former governor of Anambra State stated that he was misquoted. He explained that he had actually emphasized his commitment to partnering with individuals who share his vision for the progress of Nigeria, provided their intentions were not centered on state capture. Obi also made it clear that he remains dedicated to the Labour Party and that anyone wishing to negotiate or collaborate with him must disclose their true intentions. He highlighted the importance of addressing the pressing challenges of hunger, poverty, insecurity, and other issues that Nigerians are currently facing.
Additionally, Obi criticized the current administration for its actions violating human rights and civil liberties, which he believes undermine democracy and threaten national stability. He expressed his concern over the government’s tactics, including the harassment and arrest of dissenters, which have created a climate of fear and repression. Obi called attention to the misuse of terrorism charges against peaceful activists and the complicity of the judiciary in these actions, raising alarms about the state of the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights in Nigeria. He urged President Tinubu to respect and protect democratic principles, engage with citizens, and prioritize addressing the challenges of hardship and insecurity in order to foster a more inclusive and just society. Obi emphasized that his commitment to Nigeria is unwavering and stated that he is determined to contribute to the country’s progress, even without holding any official position.
In relation to the 2027 election, Obi clarified that if he decides to run for any office, he would not align himself with individuals whose sole aim is state capture or simply winning an election. He called for a focus on ensuring that no child is left behind, bringing millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms, promoting healthy living, and lifting people out of poverty. Obi expressed his surprise at the misrepresentation of his words and reiterated his open-mindedness to work with those who are committed to building a new Nigeria. He stressed that he is not desperate for any position and believes he can make significant contributions to the country’s progress without holding office.
