Julien Alfred made history for St Lucia by capturing the country’s first-ever Olympic medal with a gold in the women’s 100m race.
ShaCarri Richardson’s highly anticipated comeback took a disappointing turn as Julien Alfred dominated the rainy conditions to secure the 100-meter title in a speedy 10.72 seconds. This remarkable achievement brought Saint Lucia its inaugural Olympic medal.
Competing in the lane adjacent to Richardson, Alfred made an impressive start and powered through the rain, comfortably beating Richardson by a margin of 0.15 seconds, approximately three body lengths. Her training partner, Melissa Jefferson, earned the bronze medal with a time of 10.92 seconds.
Throughout the week, the path appeared to be clear for Richardson, the reigning world champion, who was finally making her Olympic debut following an unfortunate disqualification in Tokyo three years ago due to a positive marijuana test. However, the withdrawal of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a strong contender from Jamaica, from the semifinal completely changed the dynamics of the competition, as the entire Jamaican team was excluded from the 100m event.
Among the remaining contenders, Alfred emerged as the strongest, being the sole Olympic entrant besides Richardson to achieve a sub-10.8 time this year. In the semifinals, Alfred had already defeated Richardson by a margin of 0.05 seconds, offering a glimpse of the final’s outcome.
In the final faceoff, Alfred once again outperformed Richardson, triumphing with a margin three times larger than their previous encounter.
