Paris, France is facing another alarming incident as former Brazilian football star Zico reportedly falls victim to a robbery on Friday, July 26, 2024. This unfortunate event occurred on the same day as the scheduled opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics, causing concern among the public.
According to a report from Daily Mail, the stolen items were stored in Zico’s briefcase, which contained jewels and bank notes worth a staggering 420,000. Zico, who is currently in Paris as part of Brazil’s Olympic delegation, joins a multitude of athletes from the South American nation, all aiming to secure victories in various sports, including football.
This terrifying ordeal has left the 71-year-old legend of Brazilian football facing substantial financial loss while attending the Olympic Games as a spectator. French authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, with France’s Brigade for the Repression of Banditry leading the search for the perpetrators.
Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated case at the Games. Argentina’s head coach, Javier Mascherano, has also reported a similar robbery at his team’s Olympic training base prior to their match against Morocco.
Zico, who is revered in Brazilian football, achieved legendary status during his time at Flamengo, a prestigious club in Brazil. Throughout his career, he secured multiple top titles, such as four Brazilian top-flight championships and the Intercontinental Cup, where Flamengo triumphed over Liverpool with a resounding 3-0 victory. After successful stints in Italy with Udinese, he concluded his playing career in Japan and subsequently transitioned into management, coaching several top European teams.
As France prepares to officially inaugurate the Games on Friday evening, this incident involving Zico’s stolen luxury goods in a taxi adds to the security challenges faced by the host country.
