An exhilarating moment marked the conclusion of the Chief Sam Awiaka @ 70 Birthday Golf Tournament at the Benin Club Golf Section (BCGS), Edo State, last Saturday.
Victor Amadu and Ehis Igbinadolor emerged as the winners in the men’s and ladies’ categories, respectively. The best gross trophies were awarded to Osazee Iyare, the BCGS Competition Secretary, and Sandra Emina, the immediate past LGAN South-South Zonal Vice President, with impressive gross scores of 76 and 87, respectively.
The week-long tournament, which commenced on Wednesday, featured events for Caddies, Eaglets, Professionals, invited guests, and members. It was organized by Princess Nkeruika Awiaka, the wife of the celebrant and former Lady Captain, in collaboration with the Friends of Chief Awiaka under the Chairmanship of Ignatius Aigbonkhaode, a former BCGS Captain.
Amadu clinched the victory in the men’s handicap 0-18 category with a net score of 71. Dr. Bola Atua, a former BCGS Captain, secured the second position, edging out Felix Agamwonyi in a count-back as they both recorded a net score of 72.
In the ladies’ handicap 0-20 category, Igbinadolor emerged victorious with an impressive net score of 75, surpassing Suwadeetu Mahmud, a former Lady Captain, who finished with a net score of 76, and Debby Otabor with a net score of 78.
Adekunle Edeki triumphed in the handicap 19-28 category with a net score of 74, while Dr. Queen Adesuwa claimed the victory in the ladies’ handicap 21-36 category with a net score of 73.
In the veteran categories, Juliet Ugiagbe, a former lady captain, secured the trophy in the ladies’ division with a net score of 75, while Monday Ikhureigbe emerged as the victor in the men’s division. Dr. Gabriel Ihenyen triumphed in the super veterans cadre.
The individual awards were dominated by the Ugiagbe family. Mrs. Juliet Ugiagbe and her husband, Lawson Ugiagbe, a former Benin Club President, emerged victorious in the nearest the pin hole 14 event on the first day. Dorothy Chukwu and Pharmacist Enoma claimed the ladies’ and men’s longest drive awards, respectively.
On day two of the tournament, Suwadeetu Mahmud and R. Idehen won the nearest the pin hole 14 event in the ladies’ and men’s categories, respectively. Igho and O. Moses emerged as the champions in the ladies’ and men’s longest drive categories.
Chief Awiaka expressed his gratitude to the BCGS management, friends, and other guests for their presence at the tournament. He reiterated his commitment to contributing to the development of the game.
Joseph Idahosa, the Captain of the Club, commended the tournament organizers for successfully hosting a week-long tournament that catered to all categories of participants.
The closing ceremony, which continued until midnight, featured the presentation of trophies and various household items to all the distinguished winners in their respective categories.
