The board and management of Premier Records Limited have extended their condolences to the family of the late Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, a renowned Nigerian vocalist and legendary musician, who sadly passed away on Tuesday.
The label expressed shock at the unfortunate occurrence and has been deeply saddened by the loss.
In a brief interview, Mr. Michael Odiong, the CEO of Premier Records, Nigeria’s oldest record label, expressed his sorrow over the death of a talented artist who not only possessed a beautiful voice but also actively contributed to the industry’s growth.
Onwenu was a pioneer member of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and played a crucial role during critical times when the trade union faced challenges. She also played a significant role in establishing a functional Collective Management Organization (CMO) in Nigeria.
She fought passionately and made many sacrifices for the betterment of the industry, ensuring that younger artists would have better lives and receive fair remuneration for their hard work. Premier Records proudly represented her, distributed her works for years, and diligently accounted for her.
Onwenu was at the forefront in the battle against piracy, mobilizing artists to support anti-piracy activities. She will be remembered for her incredible body of work that embraced culture and tradition in a modern context. Her songs carried messages of peace and unity.
Her loss will be deeply felt. We join millions of fans worldwide in mourning her passing and pray that her family finds solace knowing that she lived a purposeful and fulfilling life, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.
The label calls upon both the Federal government and the Imo State government to honor Onyeka Onwenu by naming a significant infrastructure or monument after her. This gesture will ensure that her name remains alive in the hearts of Nigerians for generations to come.
