The President and Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), Dr Christiana Atako, has revealed that the Institute’s Fellows award is only conferred upon deserving Nigerians each year.
During this year’s edition of the Awards, Fellows, and Spouses Day Luncheon, Mrs Atako emphasized the significance of the event in the Institute’s calendar. She explained that it is a ceremony where qualified and deserving members are granted the highest and most prestigious professional membership grade of the Institute.
Moreover, Mrs Atako highlighted that it serves as an opportunity for the older Fellows to gather, socialize, celebrate, and welcome new Fellows into their ranks.
In February 1963, the tradition of upgrading members to the Fellow cadre began with the election and induction of the first three Fellows of the Institute. Since then, the process of upgrading has remained meticulous, ensuring that only those who truly deserve the award are honored annually.
Mrs Atako also mentioned that the Institute has classified Fellows into various faculties based on their professional competencies. These faculties include Leadership and Governance, Technology and Communication, Education and Social Development, Finance, Accounts and Management Audit, Planning Economics and Management, and Safety, Health and Environment Management.
The role of these faculties is to identify and address issues and challenges related to their respective disciplines. They also propose studies and make policy recommendations to the government through the Institute’s public policy advocacy initiative.
Similar to the old Fellows, all the individuals being upgraded on this occasion will be informed of their faculty.
Additionally, Mrs Atako mentioned the newly introduced Fellows Forum, where Fellows contribute to the Institute’s body of knowledge by discussing contemporary management, leadership, and governance issues on a monthly basis through Zoom meetings.
Mrs Atako encouraged the Fellows to continue their active participation in the Fellows Forum, as it aligns with the Council’s decision to establish Fellows Faculties.
Furthermore, she congratulated the Institute’s elder statesmen and women who received the Life Membership award during the event, acknowledging their unwavering commitment and loyalty to the Institute over the years.
To qualify for the Life Membership award, a member must be at least 70 years old, have served the Institute and the nation selflessly, maintain a spotless record, remain up-to-date with annual membership subscriptions, and fulfill other statutory obligations consistently.
This recognition and award are an appreciation of the recipients’ unwavering belief in and dedication to the Institute’s matters over the years.
On a final note, Mrs Atako hinted that the 2024 Annual National Management Conference (ANMC) of the Institute will take place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in September. The conference will focus on the theme “Economic Stability and National Security: The Contending Issues and the Way Forward.”
