Key players from AFCON 2023, including the Man-of-the-Competition William Ekong, forwards Victor Osimhen and Taiwo Awoniyi, have been called back to the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

William Ekong missed out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in June due to an injury. The same applied to Aina, Awoniyi, and Victor Osimhen, who were also sidelined with injuries.

Ola Aina, who played every minute of the AFCON tournament, returns to the team after recovering from an injury he sustained while playing for his club, Nottingham Forest.

The squad consists of three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders, and seven forwards.

There are also some returning players, including Amas Obasogie from Bendel Insurance, Olisa Ndah based in South Africa, and Taiwo Awoniyi who hasn’t been called up since the 1-1 draw with Lesotho in November last year.

The Super Eagles will face Benin Republic’s Cheetahs at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 7th. They will then travel to Kigali to play against Amavubi at the Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday, September 10th.

All the players are expected to report in Uyo on Monday, September 2nd.
