Nigerian Football Stars Determined to Avenge World Cup Qualifiers Loss
Super Eagles players, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi, have expressed their determination to seek revenge for Nigeria’s defeat in the World Cup qualifiers as they prepare to face Benin Republic in a crucial AFCON qualifier.
Both players are committed to giving their best in the upcoming match and are determined to restore the pride of the national team after the painful setback.
They were part of the squad when Nigeria faced Benin Republic in their recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Despite Raphael Onyedika’s early goal at the Olympic Stadium in Cote d’Ivoire, the Super Eagles suffered a 2-1 defeat after a strong second-half performance by Gernot Rohr’s side.
The upcoming AFCON qualifiers present a perfect opportunity for Nigeria to turn the tables on their West African rivals. Drawn into the same group for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, Nigeria and Benin Republic find themselves in a familiar confrontation.
Iwobi and Ndidi have promised a more determined and focused approach this time. “We didn’t reach our potential in the World Cup qualifiers, but we are determined to set things right in Uyo,” said Ndidi, the midfielder from Leicester City. Iwobi also emphasized their collective determination, stating, “We have a lot to fight for and a lot to prove. We are fully aware of our capabilities, and it’s time to consistently demonstrate them in the Nigerian jersey, just as we do for our clubs.”
The expectations are high, and the squad is ready to meet them. Their goal is crystal clear – to secure the points they need for qualification.
The Super Eagles will face Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7th, in Uyo, before traveling to Rwanda to play against The Wasps, the national team, three days later.
